Her previous wonderful schedule :

0800 : wake, potty, breakfast, play
1030 : nap
1200 : wake, potty, lunch, go for walk, play
1430 : nap
1600 : wake, potty, snack, play
1830 : dinner, bathtime
2000 : bedtime

….became this:

0800 : wake, potty, breakfast, play
1030 : nap
1200 : wake, potty, lunch, go for walk, play
1430 : walk around her crib
1500 : cry, roll around, cry
1530 : scream, cry, wail, cry, scream
1600 : scream, fight potty, snack, cling to Mommy
1830 : sleepy, whiny dinner, bathtime
2000 : bedtime, cry, scream, cry (held or not)
2100 : sleep in exhaustion
2200 : wake and cry for another 30 min
2230 : finally sleep
0645 : wake more than an hour early

The options:

  1. Keep her awake all the morning, have lunch at 1130am, and one nap for the day at 1230pm
Results: This barely worked for us. She gets super tired and can barely eat lunch. By naptime she’s borderline overtired and can’t fall asleep very well. Or wakes early. Of the four days we tried this she only had one 2hr nap. She only napped an hour the other days. Dinner and evening routine continued to be whiny, clingy and cranky. My Hubs declared, “She’s clearly not ready to drop a nap. She still needs two!
  2. Keep her regular morning nap, push the afternoon nap later
Results: This took some trouble shooting to find out how much awake time was just right for her. We bumped her 1430 nap to 1500 then to 1530 and finally to 1600. The point where she wasn’t getting up and walking around for another 30 minutes was the indicator we found the nap sweet spot. Hurray! She was a little more groggy and clingy when she woke but her nap gave me the time to prep dinner so that when she was awake, I could do more cuddling and then feed her soon after.

Her new schedule looks like this:

0800 : wake, potty, breakfast, independent play time*, play
1030 : nap
1200 : wake, potty, lunch, go for walk, play
1530 : snack time, potty
1600 : nap
1730 : wake, potty, play
1830 : dinner, bathtime
2000 : bedtime

*independent play time is where she plays by herself in the play pen for a set period of time. More on this in another post later.
